Nic, I'm seriously thinking to buy MidiBus and use it as a MIDI master clock generator for other apps.
I have a question though.
From what I understand, it is not possible yet :
I would like to be able to tap tempo via an external MIDI pedal and set MidiBus tempo that way.
Is it possible?
If not, is there any plan to add this feature in a near future update?
Really appreciate your apps and user support.

You are correct; no tap tempo yet. It is the most requested enhancement and at the top of the list (both via UI or MIDI). Cannot promise a date, but it will happen.

Noticed you added midi controllable tempo, and ui based tap tempo, which is great. Any chance of seeing midi controlled tap tempo soon?

Hi rad3d, OK, let's see if I can add this in if I find a spot of spare time this week. Generally the tap via MIDI could come in via a note event eg from a keyboard or drum pad, but the issue I need to work out is when should MidiBus react to this and set the tempo? Not while playing a fast arpeggio I would think! So, we need to come up with a mechanism to put the app into 'detect bpm via MIDI note mode' so that you can adjust tempo remotely with the app in the background entirely. Here's a couple of thoughts: - Allocate another controller that turns on/off the detect bpm mode, so you press that controller button to set tempo and then tap any note and then exit the detect mode when the controller goes to off. - Just control the tempo via on/off controller only and all you need to do is tap a button mapped to that controller Maybe you have other ideas how this would work from your perspective? I think when I've seen this done, it's usually done with multiple taps from the source controller. For example, 3 taps in a row would average the tempo of all taps, with the last one triggering the change and signaling the downbeat. So, the first 2 signal the detection, the 3rd triggers the tempo change. Anything less than 3 taps within the lowest potential bpm supported (20?) cancels the trigger and resets the process.
I've also seen a 4 beat average, with a 5th beat trigger, for higher averaging accuracy.
I wouldn't want to see a second controller as my purpose is to have a single footswitch to tap into it.

Yes, I'm really hoping this update is available in time for an upcoming tour (but it's next week, so I'm not going to throw a tantrum if it isn't, merely wishing and hoping here...  ?). Midibus is the best solution to ios syncing troubles and the addition of tap tempo will make it an incredibly useful tool for live performance. |

I also want this:) Reading the description of MidiBus, I assumed that the "Tap Tempo" feature combined with "MIDI Control" already provided this.
Context: I need a master clock for Loopy and GR-55, and I need hands-free operation. And I want to tap the tempo using a SoftStep pedal. This is working with only Loopy+SoftStep, and I've demonstrated to my satisfaction that MidiBus can send a decent clock to both Loopy and GR-55, but I'm still missing the ability to tap tempo with my foot.
Regarding the implementation of this feature, I like how Loopy receives multiple taps before locking the tempo. I think it consumes 3 and sends on the 4th. The immediate vs. buffered mode could be controlled by a global setting if need be.
Note that both the CC# and the channel can be configured in Loopy. The channel selection is important. I don't mind if the CC# is hard-coded as long as the control channel can be configured. In MiMix, the control channel is a global setting, and this is OK for a start.

Since my question appears to be related to the original...
Right now, I'm attempting to set up a system for a pair of vocalists. They want to be able to to toggle on and off tempo-sync'd delays with their live band sets, and I assume this will only be possible/practical via an external controller tempo tap.
I've never messed with this category of functionality, nor MIDI synchronizing. Would it be necessary to use an app like MIDI Bridge, or is it entirely dependent on which apps are getting used?
And along those lines, if you're aware of a pair of delay units that might be useful for my goals, I'd sure appreciate the suggestion. Or suggestions on what such a setup might look like. Everything I've tried so far lacks MIDI tempo tap, and doesn't look like it could be MIDI sync'd either. I'm pretty lost on this subject, so if you have any info to share on the topic broadly, It would be a huge help.

Hi mok (and others), I will be adding MIDI controlled tap tempo to MidiBus app over the next few days along with support for a new companion app so the good news is that you will be able to tap tempo to the MidiBus app and start/stop the clock all via MIDI very soon (say a couple of weeks for Apple to approve) Now, in terms of tempo syncing the delay app/unit must be able to slave their timing to a clock signal. If they do, then you would set up MidiBus as the master clock with the delay app receiving the clock and then you can tap tempo via MIDI to set the MidiBus bpm (while running or stopped) and the delay app should follow suit. This is not something that MidiBridge would be needed for. Delay apps/units that slave to clock? I *think* AUFX:Dub does, but if you mean external units I think most TC delays have this and I suspect many others do too. I can't give you a definitive answer on that one. Regards, Nic. |

That's Great! Looks like I'll be working MIDIBus into the system for this. My vocalists will have their live timed delays, and all will be good in the world. I'll have them do an initial test with the phrase, "Thank you Nic."
I'll check into AUFX:Dub. I can also verify that Virsyn Tap appears to have some capacity of MIDI sync, which I've yet to test. New grounds for me.

I have just submitted MidiBus version 1.5 to Apple which includes tempo tap via a learnt event. Can take anything up to 2 weeks to go through the review process. If anyone would like a testflight copy, just PM me.
